In-Patient Rehab

Who is in-patient rehab for?

  • people who need rehabilitation for traumatic or severe injuries, illnesses, or surgeries
  • people who are medically stable, but need medical care for a set time or the forseeable future
  • people who need medical care that cannot be safely provided at home

What is in-patient rehab?

  • similar to SNFs but provide more intensive rehab
  • patients often stay up to 35 days
  • does NOT provide acute care like a hospital, but does provide medical management
  • staffed with physicians, nurses, and nursing assistants
  • therapies can occur for multiple hours per day, 5-7 days per week
  • care may include:

             - physical and/or occupational therapy

             - nursing services

             - diet/feeding management

             - medication management

             - speech language pathology

             - social work

             - memory care

  • *Note: some SNFs may advertise that they include rehab and may have "rehab" in the title - but these are not the same as in-patient rehab facilities. It's helpful to clarify the type of facility as if affects length of stay and intensity of care.

When should in-patient rehab be considered?

  • when someone has sustained a severe injury, illness, or surgery and needs significant rehabilitation in order to return home
