Hospice

Who is hospice for?

  • Hospice is for people with a terminal illness who's life expectancy is 6 months or less, given their illness follows the usual course.

What is hospice?

  • Hospice is a holistic approach to end-of-life care. It includes physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual care for both patients and their caregivers.
  • Care may be provided in the patient's home or in a facility, depending on the family's needs and preferences.
  • Hospice offers assistance with things such as:

                - medications

                - hygiene

                - pain management

                - other symptom management

                - grief and bereavement

                - spiritual counseling

When is hospice appropriate?

  • Familes often call hospice too late, rather than too early.
  • If your loved one has a terminal diagnosis or has other signs of end-of-life decline.
  • Ask your Primary Care Provider if/when hospice might be appropriate. They will be able to give you more information specific to your circumstances and may then place a referral for a hospice evaluation.
