Assisted Living Facilities (ALF)

Who are ALFs for?

  • people who are not able to live completely independently due to needing assistance with activities of daily living
  • people who don't require as much care as a skilled nursing facility, but still need some help or supervision

What is an ALF?

  • a community where people go to live 24/7 that can provide some extra support
  • residents live independently in their own rooms or apartments while having access to help and close community
  • staffed with nurses and nursing assistants
  • may not always have a physician on staff, but often have relationships with community physicians and periodic physician visits
  • services offered may include:

               - group meals

               - memory care

               - medication management

               - social activities

               - transport to medical appointments

               - assistance with activities such as meals, bathing, toileting, hair and nail care

When should ALFs be considered for care?

  • when someone doesn't feel safe living at home independently
  • when someone has minimal social interaction and becomes lonely
  • when someone has difficulty caring for themselves
  • when someone doesn't have adequate help or support to live at home
